In-the-Ear and Custom Hearing Aids
Custom hearing aids are made to match the shape of your ear. Depending on size, they may fill most of the outer ear, sit partly in the ear canal, or fit deeply enough to be difficult to see. Their main advantage is not simply appearance—it is the ability to combine a personalized physical fit with controls, power, and features chosen for the wearer.
Custom Hearing Aid Styles
- In-the-Ear (ITE): fills much of the outer ear and offers the most room for controls, larger batteries, and added features.
- In-the-Canal (ITC): sits partly in the canal and partly in the outer ear, balancing discretion with easier handling.
- Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC): fits mostly inside the canal and is more discreet.
- Invisible-in-the-Canal (IIC): sits deepest and is designed for maximum cosmetic discretion.
Why Some People Prefer Custom Devices
A one-piece device can be easier for some people to insert than a behind-the-ear case and receiver wire. Larger ITE and ITC models may also provide room for volume controls, program buttons, telecoils, directional microphones, rechargeable batteries, and wireless connectivity.
Custom devices do not interfere with glasses and may feel more secure for people who dislike something resting behind the ear. They can also be useful when the outer ear shape makes a standard dome or receiver difficult to retain.
Tradeoffs to Consider
Because the entire device sits in or near the ear canal, custom hearing aids are exposed to wax, skin oils, heat, and moisture. The smallest styles may be harder to handle, have shorter battery life, and offer fewer connectivity or control options. Larger custom models are easier to manage but more visible.
Wind noise, ear-canal sensitivity, jaw movement, and changes in ear shape can also affect comfort. A precise impression, shell design, venting choice, and follow-up modification are important.
Current Custom Options From Our Main Brands
Starkey offers ITE, ITC, CIC, and IIC options across selected current product families, including Omega AI and Signature Series configurations. Signia’s Insio family includes IIC, CIC, ITC, and ITE formats, including rechargeable custom options in selected styles. Phonak’s Virto line is its main custom family, with exact availability depending on current model and technology level.
Who May Benefit Most?
- People who want a custom physical fit
- Wearers who use glasses or hats frequently
- People who prefer a single-piece device
- Those who need larger controls because of dexterity or vision concerns
- Patients whose ear anatomy does not retain standard domes well
- People who value discreet CIC or IIC designs
Who May Need Another Style?
People with severe or profound hearing loss, frequent ear drainage, very narrow canals, significant wax problems, or rapidly changing hearing may be better served by a Receiver-in-Canal or Behind-the-Ear system. Those styles can offer more power, easier parts replacement, and greater flexibility.
Fitting and Verification Matter
A custom shell must fit securely without soreness, pressure, or movement when chewing. Programming must then be verified for audibility, comfort, and speech clarity. We use Real Ear Measurement and Live Speech Mapping when appropriate to confirm that the device is delivering useful sound in the individual ear.
Care and Repair
Custom devices require regular wax-filter changes and careful cleaning of microphone openings and the sound outlet. If sound becomes weak or intermittent, professional cleaning may solve the problem before manufacturer repair is needed. See our cleaning and tune-up service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are custom hearing aids more comfortable?
They can be very comfortable when the impression, shell, venting, and fit are correct. Adjustments may be needed if pressure or movement develops.
Can custom hearing aids be rechargeable?
Yes, selected current ITE, ITC, and CIC products offer rechargeable options.
Do custom hearing aids stream phone calls?
Many larger custom models do. Wireless features vary by product and size.
Are they suitable for severe hearing loss?
Some larger custom devices provide substantial power, but BTE or power RIC systems may offer more headroom and flexibility.
How long do custom shells last?
Shell life varies with wear, ear changes, moisture, and care. Internal electronics may need service even when the shell remains intact.
