Invisible Hearing Aids
Invisible hearing aids are custom devices designed to sit deep in the ear canal so very little—or none—of the hearing aid is visible from the outside. They can be an excellent option for people who place a high priority on discretion, but they are not automatically the best choice for every hearing loss, ear shape, lifestyle, or level of dexterity.
What Counts as an Invisible Hearing Aid?
The smallest custom styles are usually called Invisible-in-the-Canal (IIC) and Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC). An IIC rests deeper in the canal, often near the second bend, while a CIC sits slightly farther outward and may show only a small removal handle. Both are made from an impression or scan of the individual ear.
Advantages of Invisible Hearing Aids
- Very discreet appearance
- Custom physical fit
- Natural use of the outer ear for sound collection
- Less interference with glasses, hats, and some masks
- No visible case behind the ear
Important Tradeoffs
Small size limits battery capacity, manual controls, wireless hardware, and the space available for directional microphones. Some invisible models do not offer direct phone streaming or rechargeable power. The deep fit may also be more difficult for people with reduced finger control, vision problems, sensitive ear canals, frequent wax buildup, or rapidly changing hearing loss.
Ear anatomy matters. A narrow, sharply curved, or unusually short canal may not provide enough space for a safe and stable fit. A professional examination is needed before recommending this style.
Who May Be a Good Candidate?
Invisible devices are often considered for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss who have suitable ear anatomy, good dexterity, realistic expectations, and strong cosmetic preferences. Some current custom products can support more hearing loss than older generations, but power and feature needs still determine whether an IIC or CIC is practical.
Current Options From the Brands We Fit
Starkey offers Invisible-in-the-Canal and Completely-in-the-Canal styles, including discreet custom options in its Signature Series and selected Omega AI configurations. Signia offers Insio custom devices in IIC, CIC, ITC, and ITE styles. Phonak custom options are generally found in the Virto family, with availability depending on current product line and fitting needs.
Invisible Does Not Mean Maintenance-Free
Deep-canal devices are exposed to heat, moisture, and earwax. Wax guards, microphone openings, battery contacts, and shells require regular care. Because the receiver sits inside the custom shell, repair may require manufacturer service rather than a simple receiver swap.

Invisible vs. Receiver-in-Canal
A Receiver-in-Canal device may be slightly more visible, but it often provides greater flexibility, rechargeable options, easier receiver replacement, more wireless features, and more room for advanced microphones. For many first-time users, a slim RIC in a hair-matching color is less noticeable than expected.
How We Decide Whether Invisible Is Right for You
Gwen Cantrell, BC-HIS considers hearing-test results, speech understanding, ear anatomy, wax history, dexterity, lifestyle, phone use, feature priorities, and budget. The goal is not to force the smallest device; it is to select the smallest style that can still meet the hearing and support needs reliably.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are invisible hearing aids completely hidden?
IIC devices may be nearly invisible in suitable ears. Visibility depends on ear shape, canal size, device color, and viewing angle.
Can invisible hearing aids be rechargeable?
Rechargeability is available in some custom styles, but the smallest IIC devices often still use disposable batteries.
Do they work for severe hearing loss?
Some custom devices can provide substantial power, but severe or profound loss may require a larger custom aid, RIC, BTE, or earmold system.
Can they connect to a smartphone?
Some can, but wireless features vary. The smallest devices may omit streaming hardware to preserve size.
Are they harder to clean?
They require consistent wax and moisture care because the entire device sits in the ear canal.
