Hearing Tests & Diagnostics

Hearing tests in Lawrenceville, Georgia, should answer more than whether you can hear a series of beeps. They should help explain why voices sound unclear, why restaurants are exhausting, whether one ear performs differently from the other, and what the next step should be.

At Hearing Aid Factory Outlet inside Sugarloaf Mills, Gwen Cantrell, BC-HIS, combines hearing-threshold testing with speech-understanding and speech-in-noise measures when appropriate. The goal is to understand how you hear in everyday life—not simply generate an audiogram.

Which hearing test do you need?

These services have different purposes. Choosing the right starting point prevents a quick screening from being mistaken for a complete evaluation.

Why speech testing matters

Two people with similar hearing thresholds can have very different difficulty understanding words. One may hear speech but miss consonants. Another may do reasonably well in quiet yet struggle as soon as several people begin talking. Speech testing helps separate these concerns and creates more realistic expectations before hearing aids are selected or adjusted.

If you already wear hearing aids, testing may also help determine whether the problem involves changing hearing, physical fit, programming or the limits of the current devices. When fitting verification is needed, learn about Real Ear Measurement and Live Speech Mapping.

What happens during an evaluation?

Gwen begins with your hearing history and the situations causing difficulty. Bring information about recent ear symptoms, medical changes, noise exposure, current hearing aids and the places where communication is hardest. Testing is performed in the clinic’s spacious sound-treated booth, and the findings are explained in plain language.

A hearing evaluation is not a substitute for medical care. Sudden hearing change, ear pain, drainage, significant dizziness, one-sided symptoms or pulsatile tinnitus may require prompt physician or ENT evaluation. Our ENT and Medical Referral Assistance page explains when referral may come before hearing-aid decisions.

Hearing test FAQs

Is a hearing screening the same as an evaluation?

No. A screening identifies whether more testing may be useful. A comprehensive evaluation provides substantially more information about hearing thresholds, speech understanding and appropriate next steps.

Can I be tested if I already own hearing aids?

Yes. Bring both hearing aids, the charger or batteries, your smartphone, accessories and any previous hearing test.

Will the results automatically mean I need hearing aids?

No. Results may lead to monitoring, communication guidance, medical referral, hearing protection, hearing-aid discussion or evaluation of devices you already own.
