Medicare and Hearing Aids in Lawrenceville, GA
Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage are not the same when it comes to hearing benefits.
Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids or routine exams for fitting hearing aids.
Some diagnostic hearing and balance exams may be covered under Medicare Part B when Medicare requirements are met. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer extra hearing benefits, but those benefits vary by plan, network and year.
What Original Medicare does not cover
Hearing aids
Original Medicare generally does not pay for prescription hearing aids.
Routine fitting exams
Exams performed specifically to select or fit hearing aids are not covered by Original Medicare.
Routine hearing-aid service
Programming, adjustments, cleaning, supplies and accessories are not automatically covered by Original Medicare.
Medigap does not add hearing-aid coverage
Standard Medigap policies generally help with patient cost-sharing for Medicare-covered services; they do not usually add hearing-aid benefits.
What Medicare Part B may cover
Medicare Part B may cover diagnostic hearing and balance exams when they are medically necessary and meet Medicare requirements. Coverage is different from a routine hearing-aid consultation or fitting exam.
Medical diagnostic purpose
The exam must be used to diagnose or manage a medical condition, not simply to choose hearing aids.
Provider and ordering rules
Medicare rules determine who may order and perform the service and whether a referral or order is required.
Deductible and coinsurance
When Part B coverage applies, the annual deductible and coinsurance may still apply.
Our practice can explain whether a visit is a hearing-aid service, a private-pay hearing evaluation or a service that may need to be handled through a Medicare-participating medical provider.
Some Part C plans include extra hearing benefits
Medicare Advantage plans may offer benefits that Original Medicare does not, including hearing-aid allowances, copay-based devices, hearing exams or access through a contracted hearing network.
Those benefits can change annually and may depend on using a specific provider, manufacturer, technology tier or third-party network. A plan advertisement does not tell you the complete out-of-pocket cost or service package.
See our Medicare Advantage hearing benefits page for the detailed checklist.
Verify the benefit before choosing hearing aids
Is there an allowance or copay?
Ask whether the benefit is a fixed dollar amount, a copay schedule or a discount program.
Must I use a network?
Some plans require a contracted provider or third-party hearing network.
Which models are included?
The benefit may apply only to selected manufacturers, technology levels or product families.
How often can I use it?
Benefits may renew every year, every several years or only after a defined replacement period.
What services are included?
Ask about fitting, Real Ear Measurement, follow-up visits, repairs, loss and damage, batteries and accessories.
Can benefits be used here?
Confirm whether the plan recognizes our practice and whether claims or authorizations are required.
Medicare is not the only possible source of help
Depending on eligibility, patients may use employer or retiree insurance, veterans benefits, HSA or FSA funds, financing or other hearing benefits. See our hearing-aid insurance benefits, HSA and FSA and financing pages.
Check the current rule directly
Because benefits can change, review the current Medicare coverage pages for hearing aids and hearing and balance exams, and contact your plan using the number on your member card.
